Microsoft releases new security updates for its products at least once a month. In most cases, the Windows Update service does an excellent job of downloading and installing Windows updates automatically. You can also manually download and install the latest cumulative security update for your Windows version (build). For example, on computers with the wususerv service disabled, on disconnected environments (if you are not using a WSUS server where you can manually test and approve Windows updates), on a local network with a metered connection, etc. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle []).push();

Heads up: Putting the Windows 7 SP1 April 2016 Convenience Update (KB3125574) in your image, using the instructions in this post, will show one failed update (KB3037623) once Windows update runs on the machine. Does not seem to be a very critical update (update to Hyper-V integration components), but I have asked the WU team to confirm.

The below changes to the CustomSettings.ini are critical if you want to install the Windows 7 SP1 April 2016 Convenience Update as part of your Windows 7 reference image build. These changes makes sure to exclude multiple-reboot updates that are already in the convenience update, but flagged incorrectly on Microsoft Update.

MDT 2013 Update 2 can be installed either on a file server, or on your own laptop, but in this scenario I use a file server named MDT01. MDT 2013 Update 2 requires Windows ADK 10 (use v1607 or later). In this guide I also assume that you have a local WSUS server in your network, to which you have approved Windows 7 updates, Feature Packs (to get Microsoft .NET Framework updates) and Developer Tools, Runtimes and Redistributables / Visual Studio* (to get updates to Visual C++ runtimes). If adding in Office 2013 or Office 2016 to your reference image (optional), make sure to approve those updates too.

This is an out of band release for images that use EC2Config as the default launch agent. This includes all Windows Server 2012 RTM and Windows Server 2012 R2 AMIs. This release updates EC2Config to the latest version to improve support for our newest EC2 instance types.

New Windows AMIs with support for NitroTPM and UEFI Secure Boot have been released. These images feature EC2Launch v2 as the default launch agent. They are available to launch on any instance type that supports NitroTPM and UEFI boot mode.

After June 2022, we will no longer release updated versions of the following images that include SQL Server 2016 SP2. SQL Server SP3 AMIs are available and will continue to be updated and released monthly.

EC2LaunchV2_Preview AMIs are discontinued, and will not be updated with new versions. However, earlier versions will continue to be available until January 2022. Existing images and custom images based on EC2LaunchV2_Preview AMIs will not be impacted, and you can continue to use them in your account. We recommend that you use the new EC2Launch v2 AMIs going forward to receive security and software updates.

A new version of Amazon Machine Images has been released. These images include EC2Launch v2 and serve as a functional preview of the new launch agent in advance of it being included by default on all Windows AMIs currently provided by AWS later this year. Note that some SSM documents and dependent services, such as EC2 Image Builder, may require updates to support EC2 Launch v2. These updates will follow in the coming weeks. These images are not recommended for use in production environments. You can read more about EC2Launch v2 at -aws/whats-new/2020/07/introducing-ec2-launch-v2-simplify-customizing-windows-instances/ and Configure a Windows instance using EC2Launch v2. All current Windows Server AMIs will continue to be provided without changes to the current launch agent, either EC2Config (Server 2012 RTM or 2012 R2) or EC2Launch v1 (Server 2016 or later), for the next several months. In the near future, all Windows Server AMIs currently provided by AWS will be migrated to use EC2Launch v2 by default as part of the monthly release. EC2LaunchV2_Preview AMIs will be updated monthly and remain available until this migration occurs.

SQL Server 2016 SP1 is a major release. The following features, which were previously available in Enterprise edition only, are now enabled in Standard, Web, and Express editions with SQL Server 2016 SP1:

All Windows Server 2008 R2 AMIs for July were removed and rolled back to AMIs dated 2016.06.15, because of an issue discovered in the AWS PV driver. The AWS PV driver issue has been fixed. The August AMI release will include Windows Server 2008 R2 AMIs with the fixed AWS PV driver and July/August Windows updates.

Until April 9, 2013, Windows 7 original release included updates and technical support, after which installation of Service Pack 1 was required for users to receive support and updates. Windows 7's server counterpart, Windows Server 2008 R2, was released at the same time. Extended support ended on January 14, 2020, over ten years after the release of Windows 7, after which the operating system ceased receiving further updates. A paid support program was available for enterprises, providing security updates for Windows 7 for up to three years since the official end of life.[10]

Among Windows 7's new features are advances in touch and handwriting recognition,[50] support for virtual hard disks,[51] improved performance on multi-core processors,[52][53][54][55] improved boot performance, DirectAccess, and kernel improvements. Windows 7 adds support for systems using multiple heterogeneous graphics cards from different vendors (Heterogeneous Multi-adapter),[56] a new version of Windows Media Center,[57] a Gadget for Windows Media Center, improved media features, XPS Essentials Pack[58] and Windows PowerShell[59] being included, and a redesigned Calculator with multiline capabilities including Programmer and Statistics modes along with unit conversion for length, weight, temperature, and several others.[60] Many new items have been added to the Control Panel, including ClearType Text Tuner[61] Display Color Calibration Wizard,[62] Gadgets, Recovery, Troubleshooting, Workspaces Center, Location and Other Sensors, Credential Manager, Biometric Devices, System Icons, and Display.[63] Windows Security Center has been renamed to Windows Action Center (Windows Health Center and Windows Solution Center in earlier builds), which encompasses both security and maintenance of the computer. ReadyBoost on 32-bit editions now supports up to 256 gigabytes of extra allocation. Windows 7 also supports images in RAW image format through the addition of Windows Imaging Component-enabled image decoders, which enables raw image thumbnails, previewing and metadata display in Windows Explorer, plus full-size viewing and slideshows in Windows Photo Viewer and Windows Media Center.[64] Windows 7 also has a native TFTP client with the ability to transfer files to or from a TFTP server.[65] 2ff7e9595c
